Multiple Dryer Vent Holes
I recently moved into a townhouse and have an issue with the dryer exhaust. The dryer is on the second floor and connects to the exhaust duct on the wall. From the wall it travels up to the attic, across the attic and vents to the roof.

I detached the flex hose between our dryer and the connection at the wall to check for blockage. I never took much notice of the second opening in the wall, but it looks like there are two openings into the dryer exhaust duct.

The exhaust was attached to the higher of the two openings. The area below the top hole was completely filled with lint when I removed the flex hose. I am a novice, but this definitely appears to be a problem.

Has anyone come across this before? Can you think of any reasons why this would be like this? I have a feeling I will have to close one of the holes and repair the duct so it vents properly and lint does not build up. Are there any safe ways to do this or should I be looking to hire a professional?

(I am replacing the flex hose with a semi-rigid duct once I have this whole thing figured out.)

Thanks for the reply.

Is there a benefit to this setup? It seems like it just causes lint to collect at the bottom until it is high enough to operate as if the bottom part was not even there.

better than plugging the pipe without it..... clean it regularly and all will be fine ...... it is commonly used on long runs in the old days ..... new driers should not need it as they pound out the air pretty good....
