moving duct for vent in wall question

i am planning on getting all new duct work in the basement before i finish it anyway but my vent for the living room is blocked by my couch and its the only place i can put the couch. it seems easy enough to pull the duct work and cut a new slot in the duct in basement and move it over 2 bays and cut a new slot in the wall for the new vent and seal up the old hole. im sure its not as easy as it sounds and i am planning on replacing it all eventually anyway but for now will that be fine?
