Moving cold air return

We want to remove a wall in between our family room and living room to make one large room. There is a cold air return in the wall in between these two rooms. The plan is remove the wall and have the cold air return in the floor. Would this cause a problem of any kind with the A/C? Im hoping that when the wall is removed that the metal can just be trimmed off and the vent stay in the current location but be in the floor.

Moving cold air return

No problems at all as long as the system receives the same amount of return air. Why not on the ceiling?

Moving cold air return

The furnace unit is in basement right below this cold air return. I don't want to run this air into the attic. Actually what I will be doing is taking down the wall and cutting away the metal of the return and then making the return in the floor. Was hoping that it wouldn't change anything since the return will be approx 6' lower than it is now.
Thanks for your help.

Moving cold air return

As long as you maintain the size or make it a little bigger even, you will be fine if you were fine with the wall return to start with.
