Standard pig tail is all that is needed. Stranded wires shouldn't be wired nutted together, unless its a locking wire nut, or a crimping wire nut.
However, few use more then a standard wire nut.

Besides the mechanical strength angle, I think the appropriate splice method vs. wire type vs. wire size very much depends on the current that the splice is asked to carry.

This kind of info is probably scattered all over the Web.

From what I have seen, any time tape is used on a splice that is exposed to the elements the tape only seals moisture in. Then the splice rots away.
