Mitsubishi or Fujitsu Mini-Split?

Well my 2-ton Mitsubishi Mini-Split heat pump just failed. According to my HVAC contractor, the problem is a large leak in the coil. It'll cost $1,150 to replace the coil or $1,385 to have a brand new Mitsubishi air handler installed. Quite frankly, I'm having a hard time justifying either amount, especially when paired with an out-of-warranty 6-year old compressor. I'm also disappointed that the Mitsubishi only has a 1-year warranty on the coil. I've never heard of such a thing with HVAC equipment.

Anyway, in looking at my options I've finally narrowed my choices to Mitsubishi and Fujitsu. Both now have a 5-year parts and 7-year compressor warranty. Pricing is comparable with the Fujitsu coming in a little less.

Does anyone have any experience with either manufacturer? If so, which one would you choose?

Mitsubishi or Fujitsu Mini-Split?

First thing I would do is get a second option.

Yes, I am, but this HVAC contractor has proven to be very honest and reliable and has helped me out many of times. In fact, I've been working with the GM for six years.

I do have another option. I located a gentlemen who is selling the same air handler I have, which looks to be in excellent shape. He recently replaced his whole system because the compressor failed and since he wasn't the original homeowner, Mitsubishi wouldn't honor the warranty. It's also a 2007 system.

However, it is a used unit with no warranty, but then again it would be a lot cheaper, provided my HVAC company is willing to install it.

i would go with the last cheaper option. If you do decide to replace then both manufacturers have proven to produce good products.

Shop around. Listening to the radio, some companys are offering 10 year parts and labor warrenties.

Does anyone have any experience with Home Depot?

Apparently, they use licensed HVAC contractors and carry the Mitsubishi brand. Plus, you can use any HD discount coupons you have as well as their 24 month interest free financing. Of course, once everyone has their markup on the job it may be cost prohibitive.

Home depot usually uses poor quality contractors....at least in my area. HD doesn't pay the contractor very well and you usually get what you pay for.

I actually have three HVAC contractors quoting this—one from HD, the others are independent dealers, one large, one small. ALL of them are Diamond Contractors, which extends the Mitsubishi warranty from 5/7 (system/compressor) to 7/7. The reviews of the HD contractor were good, so I'm comfortable with using them, provided they are competitively priced.

BTW, this should be a fair bid since the job and the equipment are the same. I'm curious to see how everyone compares, especially the HD contractor.

Here, HD doesn't pay the contractor anything. HD is just a show floor for the independant contractor, and the contractor pays HD 11% of the sale. The customer can use their HD card to pay for it.

I got a quote from the HD contractor today. They were 44% more expensive than one of the large independent HVAC companies that are bidding. His advice after I disclosed that. Go with the other guys. So much for HD.

I'd pay attention to the features (controls) if that makes any difference to you. (true temperature set-backs, coil drying feature, and others). All might not be available on all brands and models.

Actually, I decided to stick with Mitsubishi and ONLY replace the air handler. Hopefully, the existing condenser will hold up another few years.
