mice in furnace through outside air inlet

How do you keep mice from entering the furnace combustion area, where they die and corrupt the air space around the furnace

With a 90% plus gas furnace, mice enter through the outside air inlet. This inlet is integrated with the combustion air exhaust. Exhaust out the center and fresh air in around the perimeter.

I can't be the only one dealing with this problem!

If they are entering, that means that it is either too close to the ground, does not extend out far enough, or has something that allows them to jump onto the pipe in order to get in. I do not have anything on mine to stop mice or other critters, and have not had any problems with them entering my system.
