making an old fireplace functional again

Hi all,

I have an old 1930s house with a small masonry fireplace (24inches wide). The chimney has been taken down below the roof, and the opening above the fireplace has been sealed by a piece of metal. I would like to put in a vent free insert but was told that the chimney needs to vent above the roof line for this... because the heat would get into the attic. I'm not sure if there is a way to vent the chimney out the side of the attic to avoid paying to rebuild the chimney or using another material to vent out the roof? If anyone has any thoughts I would really appreciate it.
