Lutron Thermostats

Lutron has introduced their line of thermostats that work with the Radio Ra2 system. The TouchPro Wireless Thermostat:

And the seeTemp Wall control:

The TouchPro Wireless functions the same as a regular thermostat but does not allow remote INDOOR temperature sensing.

The seeTemp is only a controller and has to be used in combination with the HVAC controller which goes in same room with furnace, great idea, and accepts a remote indoor but no OUTDOOR.

So how important is it that if you have heat pumps to use balance points? I am currently using Aprilaire thermostats and have balance points set and also temperature is set by outside temperature. Both thermostats also sense temperature in bedrooms and not at the thermostat in the hallway. Oddly, this new Lutron thermostat looks very similar to the new Aprilaire 8800:

IS there a work around? Does Honeywell makes Aprilaire thermostats? Any chance the sensing modules from Aprilaire will work with the Lutron thermostat? Compared to all the other thermostats on the market, VisionPro for example, this is very short sighted by Lutron.

I was hoping to have all this incorporated in the the Radio Ra2 system I am having installed.

Lutron Thermostats

It is surprising that this does not support an outdoor sensor, or have humidity sensing capability...

I agree totally. It wouldn't be so bad if the seeTouch system had an outdoor temperature sensor on the HVAC controller.

Maybe following the current trends the soon to be released next years "new" version will be released with humidity control and proper outdoor and indoor temperature sensors. With rising energy costs hybrid systems will become the standard.

Is the lack of VisionPro IAQ (Honeywell) connectivity some sort of non-compete thing?

I wouldn't worry too much about the balance point. If you can find the btu output of the unit, it should tell you where the heating performance starts to drop off. I think its usually around 17-24 degrees F. If the heatpump can't keep up the temp in the house will not rise, and the stat will turn on the strips.

Thanks!

I guess I will have to call Lutron, these are an expensive experiment, so I need to know before buying. My concern is we like to sleep cooler than our daytime temp. The Aprilaire program I wrote switches from Heat to Cool and vice versa. Even Aprilaire 8870 won't let you set Heat and Cool within 2 degrees of each other. But by sending new commands I can change mode and set point to maintain same temp, all based on outside temp.

I guess I will not be the normal "early adapter" to Lutron thermostats.
