loud boom sound somewhere in house, every few days

We have now heard a very loud boom sound in our house 4 times...at noon, 12:00am, 3:00am, and 8:oopm. The sound always seems to be over our heads no matter what room we are in. We have no pets and have checked the attic and garage for animals. Could this be a build up of gas?

Yes. It may be delayed ignition of the burner and that is very dangerous and should be checked by a Pro ASAP. Usually if it is the ductwork you would hear it more in one room and you may have flex ducts if it is in an attic and those cannot boom.

Where is the furnace? What ducting do you have overhead? Attic?
What brand and style of furnace do you have?

I had this with a misadjusted oil furnace.
Low frequency sounds will be hard to locate.
With sounds this often, when you try a fix (like turning off the furnace) if you don't then hear it within a 24 hour day you can be quite certain you found the cause.
