Looking for an attic exhaust fan smaller than 14". My attic is cut up into 3 sections of about 700 Sq. ft. ea. I think the standard fan is over kill. Now were I can find something smaller? Thanks.

I have ridge vents and full soffit vents on my roof, front and back. The original ridge vent was perforated metal; the replacement (with re-roofing) was Cobra type. The soffits are perforated metal. All of them are open.

With either vent, I have never been able to demonstrate ANY airflow either into the soffit or out of the ridge. On a summer day, it's hotter than hell up there.

The perforated metal soffit vents get clogged with dirt, limiting their function- better to use continuous venting near the fascia board. Scroll back a few pages and read the chapter on "Attic ventilation":http://books.google.com/books?id=Z8...page&q=attic airflow with gable vents&f=false

Some of the soffit vents are only 6-7NFVA per foot, rather than 9 as the continuous; http://www.certainteed.com/resources/soffitspecsheet.pdf

The Cobra would not be my first choice: http://www.buildsite.com/dbderived/airvent/derived_files/derived20936.pdf

Is the attic air-sealed from the conditioned rooms below? Is the crawl air-sealed at the floor-line of wiring/plumbing holes to counter the stack effect?
