Question Location of Vents in Basement

I'm currently working on finishing my basement, and am at the point where I need to figure out where to locate both the vent from the furnance/air conditioner, and the return air vent.

My house has a forced-air system with a natural gas furnance.

So, should I have my heat/air vent near the floor, and the air return near the ceiling, or vice-versa?

So many homes I've been to have the heat/air vent on the ceiling in the basement, instead of having it near the floor. Why is that?

Supply on the ceiling works fine, and doesn't cause cold drafts near the end of the heat cycle.

Glad I read this post. I was going to route my venting so the heat comes out at the floor, but will now drop it from the ceiling, with returns at floor level (which will actually but much easier).
