Location of Filter

Does it make a difference if my furnace filter is located in the ceiling return grill versus above the blower in the furnace itself?

If you keep it in the ceiling grill make sure you do not leave the filter opening uncovered in the duct above furnace.

My preference personally is to use the filter rack closest to he furnace just in case the return air ducts from the ceiling filter grill back to the furnace to furnace leaking and pulls in dust.

In that case the closer the filter to the furnace the cleaner the house stays.

More important than where it is located is what kind and size of filter you use. Most homes have to a filter with not enough surface area to pull the required air through. Don't use a 3M filter or any other super filter or this also restricts airflow.
