Little heat on 2nd floor

I have a cape cod style house with gas heat/ forced air. I only have one thermostat it is located on the first floor. The gas furnace is in the basement. The first floor is warm but the second gets very chilly. There is a little heat coming from the vents but not much. Aside from calling a repair man, is there anything I can do to resolve the issue?

You can make sure your air filters are clean, balance your heating outlets to put more heat into the cold areas and less heat towards the thermostat, and try running the fan all the time(if you have that option) to balance out air distribution difficulties.

Trying to regulate the air by adjusting the registers is almost impossible. The only way to do it is by adjusting the balancing dampers in the basement. If you have balancing dampers then you close off all the first floor runs .Not completely but atleast 1/2 way.If that works then you can tinker a little to your own satisfaction.
Other than that and making sure you haven't accidently blocked the upstairs return calling a heating guy is the only thing left.

Sealing any air leaks up in the attic, around windows and doors, having proper insulation in the walls and ceilings also helps, especially up in the attic space. You can purchase a meter to check for airflow & temp from Lowe's or Home Depot, but easier to just schedule an appointment with a hvac company that will go through and check airflow, temp at returns and registers, and check over the system to make sure that it is in proper operation.

It is better to spend $200 to have a hvac tech come in and walk through your system before it gets really cold, than spend three times as much on using space heaters or electric blankets. As for being cold, get a thermometer to measure ambient air temp, and report back with that temp, and outside temp & humidity.
