Lennox G23 furnace intermittent spark ignition

Hi, I have a Lennox G23Q3/4-125-2 gas furnace with an intermittent problem. Frequently, the spark igniter fails to spark and light the burners. The sequence of events during a malfunction is as follows - thermostat calls for heat, exhaust ventilator motor comes on, a solid green light appears on the ignition control module, there is NO spark or even an attempt to spark (no clicking) and within a minute the blower comes on then shuts off.

If I kill the power to the furnace and try again it will usually ignite. Sometimes it will run all day with no problem. It still has the original Johnson Controls 41K8701 ignition control module. Any suggestions are appreciated.

That old blue module is a POS. Replace the module. New Lennox part number is a 30w33

Yep. Lennox only used that module from 94-97 and then it got real expensive for them, most failed in the 5 year warranty period. Still have a few going here but most were replaced years ago. No problems with the replacements.

Heh..I rode with a Lennox tech for a day and it seemed like every call was a Johnson control. I quit the place but when they gave me a truck it was still the same: all Johnson ignition boards.
Boss got pissy one day i was on call cause all the night calls I answered by phone were ignition problems. Boss blamed me for not having stock.."Hello! Back ordered remember?"

Frig 'em. he knew they were all back ordered. i gave him the company truck keys and walked.

Johnsons, HWell they all have good and BAD products. The S86 controls by HWell have been bombproof and the fan timer boards for the smartvalve too. No comment about the smartvalve though.:wink:

Told the customer he was on his own when those units stop as there are no parts available. Hate to see the look on their face when it croaks on Xmas day.

Back in business so far...

I tested virtually every switch and potential problem source I could find. Since the blue ignition module you discussed in your replys was about the only thing left, I went out and bought a new Honeywell 30W33 and installed it last night. It's been about 12 hours now and so far the furnace is operating perfectly!

Because the problem was intermittent, I won't feel 100% confident of the repair until the old G23 has run a few more days without any problems, but it for now it appears the Johnson Controls blue module was the culprit.

Thanks for your help !!! :)
