Leaky Steam Heat System

The Water in the gauge fell below adequate level (on the coldest night of the year). I awoke to frigid temps and refilled water the next morning...burner kicked right on and I assume ran off and on all day fine as it was nice and warm when I got home from work.... Big But, there were two pools of water on the basement floor leading to the system....no pipes leaking just water with condensation that is definetly from the boiler...
Turned up the thermostat and the system kicked on but is noticebly working harder - pipes shaking and noises in baseboard in the finished section of basement are noticeble. I've asked my Dad and he says to just watch it the next few days....He says this has happend to him if System is off in cold temps. True? Or do I need a pro?

Thanks
New home owner
