Alright I wasn't sure what category to start this thread, so if it needs to be moved feel free. First off, I purchased a new oil tank roughly 10 years ago. The oil tank is indoors, in my basement. Over the past few months I noticed the oil level drop slightly from time to time, and a smell of leaking oil. I have put paper towels around and can not seem to find out where the leak is coming from. The right side of the oil tank is up against a wall so I am unable to check that side. Are there some basic troubleshooting procedures I can over look ? And does anyone know what the typical lifespan of an oil tank is ? As well as its warranty ?
It's defiantly not under warranty if it's ten years old. Is this an indoor or outdoor tank? If it's indoors you'd definatly know it if oil was leaking enough to drop the gauge as you'd have a huge mess all over your basement. If it's outdoors you did the right thing putting something under it to see any drips. If the lines run underground it's possible they're leaking underground as well. Settling soil could have caused a or line to pull apart or break. The only way to check that though is with a shovel. Or maybe crawl around and sniff the ground where the lines run (seriously).
