lazy boiler prob.

Have a Potterton Netaheat 16/22 (not electronic). central heating boiler It will not come up to temperature and just chugs away never getting above about 50C.
gas pressure ok up to boiler but have noted valve will not adjust above 4mb and should be about 8 to 14 according to book.
Do I have a gas valve prob, or is boiler silted up,? Or any other ideas?
Cheers.

what do you mean...gas valve will not adjust above 4 mb's..are you measuring gas pressure after the valve OR are you referring to boiler pressure? without having much info and not being familiar with that boiler..if it has a low-hi firing capability..might be stuck on low fire i.e., gas valve not opening all the way...burner(s) could be restricted not allowing enough gas flow...more info might help

Was it just installed?

Was it originally set up right if it hasn't been just installed?

I would call a different company, i have never heard of a residential furnace with a problem so complicated a seasoned tech could not find the it. I'm a mechanic and I wouldn't install new drain piping in your house, I would expect the same courtesy of a plumber in regards to troubleshooting your furnace.

Hi Techhappy
Thanks for that. I have 4mb on the White Rodgers gas valve pressure nipple which measures burner pressure. The valve has burner pressure adjustment screw to adjust gas rate but it will not adjust above 4mb and the gas rate is down to about 60 % what it should be when checking at meter . On pipe just before boiler gas pressure is about 20mb when boiler running.According to book gas valve has two solenoids, one for pilot and one for main burner only.No modulation or two stage.
In writing this down it appears to me now its gas valve fault?

Not clear...
Is your house not actually warm enough or are you just going on the tridicator temp readings on the boiler?
Are the main burners going continuously with a call for heat or are the going on and off?
Natural gas or propane?
What's your altitude?
Has the boiler always been like this or is this a new problem or instalation?
Standing rads /baseboard or in floor?
Have you clocked your meter and compared it against the boiler rating plate?

If the boiler is not cycling off and is on continuous like you say..just chugging along..AND the book calls for the higher gas pressure then it is likely that the gas valve pressure regulator is defective.
