Just got quote for replacement HVAC system

Wanted to run this by you guys.....just had one of the bigger companies in Charlotte, NC come out and give me a quote on replacing a 23 yr old Trane 2 1/2 ton heat pump and handler. First of all the guy quoted me on the exact same thing I have without doing any kind of (load test I think) just looked on the lable of my old unit and quoted based on that....2nd the quote was for 7500 bucks for a 2 1/2 ton 13 seer comfortmaker. Does this sound right....sounded super high to me but not sure.

If it were just the heat pump I would say yes its high but you say he also quoted on replacing the air handler.

I would get one-two more quotes from local reputable companies on the same replacements to drive it to scale and see if they are in line.

Your welcome.

Might get a seperate quote on a package unit and compare the long term operating cost between the two.

Going to a package unit would involve way more duct work, so it would cost more. What would you gain with a package? More space where the air handler is? Service call without being home? There are advantages. I would get a couple more quotes. As for sizing on a replacement, when most salesmen come out to give a price they would ask if you were happy with the preformance of the old unit, if it worked fine they would just quote the same outputs.

Watch for rebate deals soon. March or so I think. And if you haven't used your energy tax credit yet you can get up to $500 tax credit, but you have to have at least 15 seer I think and 95% effeciency for heat. I upgraded my system spring of 06 and got a $1000 rebate and $500 tax credit.

I just saw that the tax credit expired Dec 31, 2007. There is talk of renewing it for 2008.
