intermittent burner operation on Carrier 58RAV downflow furnace

This is an intermittent problem. Thermostat calls for heat, induced draft blower starts and runs thru its time delay, electronic glow plug igniter lights and runs thru its time delay, gas valve clicks but no gas flow, no burner ignition, glow plug turns off, induced draft fan keeps running. First happened last fall in 2011. I cleaned the burner area with low pressure air and vacuumed it out and it ran fine til last night when it started doing the above again. I cleaned the burner area again and on the first try it went thru a normal start-up but when the gas valve opened the burners sputtered a couple of times then went out. It worked normally on the second try and has been fine since. I checked the condition of the flame sensor and it appears fine. My thought is it is a gas valve issue..

I'd be checking if the gas valve is getting 24V and that the valve connections are good when the glow plug is glowing. If it is then your gas valve is suspect if it's not opening up.
If no 24 V then all the limits and rollout switches on the safety circuit should be checked to see if any are open.
Do you have a blinking led light on your board that is giving you a diagnostic indication of the cause of the fault?

How,

The unit is working fine now but will measure for the 24V next time it acts up. I talked to a tech this a.m. and he suggested as you did about the voltage check. He thinks it is a control board problem (500.00 to replace) rather than a valve issue. Course it'll fail on Saturday night as these things do. I will check the LED too. Thanks for your reply.

If you can hear the gas valve click with demand it is probably not the control board.

If you find that it is getting 24 vac when this occurs, you might shut off the gas and check the inlet side of the gas valve for debris.

Thanks Houston204. I can definitely hear the gas valve click after the igniter t.d. times out. I will look into the debris issue as well. The heat is still working so far...

I have seen black flakes pressed against the screen on the inlet side of gas valves before. This was on older houses with soft copper between the gas cock and furnace.

I have only seen this twice, four years apart on the same house. The debris was heavy at the valve screen and with much finer debris inside the valve. It still ended up with the valves needing to be changed and as I saw no other debris any where else in the gas system, the source of it has remained a mystery to me.

You have a bad gas control valve.............change it and be done.

I haven't seen this too often either.

couple years back I put in a new furnace and it wouldn't fire or stay lit.

But when I put my manometer in the test port I got drastic swings in pressure.

Put on a new valve and called the gas company. Had a plugged breather to the meter regulator. Once that was replaced the furnace ran normally.

It's worth checking out either way.

this "scenario" would cause every gas burning appliance in the dwelling to be having an issue......the OP did not mention that. The number 1 rule in service is "listen to the customer".
