Insulate a Crawlspace

The addition on my house was built with a crawlspace underneath it. That whole part of the house gets much colder than the rest of it during the winter, and I find myself turning the heat up higher for that reason, since it is the main living space. The crawlspace has styrofoam insulation around the outside walls, which needs to be repositioned better. How can I heat that part of the house more efficiently? Is it better to concentrate my efforts on insulating the outside walls really well, or would it be better to insulate around my heating ducts? There are two water pipes running through the crawlspace, which will hopefully stay warm enough whatever I do.

There are lots of resources available online. Here's a good one that I have found from a Google search: http://www.newfoundlandpower.com/Man...rawlSpace.aspx

It is not a good idea for those pipes to be there. They should have been routed through the warm space, such as in the walls. Perhaps a heat wrap on these pipes will save you from any costly repairs stemming from frozen pipes this winter.

If it is un-vented, then your suppose to insulate the walls. I have been working on mine tonight. I used R-19.

Yes the crawlspace does have vents. However, they are always closed and the previous owner put the styrofoam over them.

I read somewhere that it is best to always keep them closed. Perhaps not to allow any humid air to enter?

Get those pipes covered with at least the foam wraps if not heat tape. I insulated the "ceiling" of my crawl space and the walls, put a vapor barrier (sheeting) on the floor. I think the ceiling part made the most difference, and only did the pipes after they froze. That was a drag. Good Luck.

I don't see any sign of a heating duct or a cold air return.
This area should be heated in the same manner as any other room.
The insulated area between the floor joists also requires a vapour barrier, otherwise moisture will penetrate the insulation, rendering it useless!
