Question

Installing a Humidifier where one was before

In August I purchased my first house, and though it has a humidistat next to the thermostat at some point the actual humidifier was removed. The wires from the humidistat still go into the basement but would need to be spliced as they were cut too short. There is one red and one white wire. The holes in the return and output ducts were patched with sheet metal.

Given that i have the manual, it was a lobb humidifier which was removed. The furnace was replaced in 09 or 2010, and should have a humidifier relay. The water line is still there though I think that they moved it to the ice maker for the fridge when it was uninstalled.

The house is 1800 sq feet, the furnace is an aireflo model, and the holes in the ducts are still present. Is it worth reinstalling a humidifier; can i use the existing humidistat; which humidifier model is right for this sort of application?
I should also note that the air filter would come AFTER the cutout on the return duct. I am not sure if that is ideal.
