improving air flow/block return vent

Hi,

I have single zone unit to cool 3 levels. Lowest level of course is coolest with highest level warmest. It was suggested to me to improve cooling at the higher level, to block the return located at the lowest level of the house, thus improving the draw from the return vents located at the upper levels of the home. I have scoured the internet to confirm this approach as an effective one, but no luck finding anything that even suggests this approach.

Anyone have thoughts to share?

thanks, Paul

are the 3 returns ducted back down to the air handler furnace? you have a supply duct and return duct up thru the middle of the house and the stat location is?

I believe the returns are ducted back down to the air handler/furnace. all three returns are located in the middle of the home. the stat is located on the main (middle floor).

It might help a little, but its not fixing the problem.I am not a real big fan of zoning hot air units ,but it sounds like that might be the way to go in your situation.
