Immersion heater

I turned on my immersion heater for two hours not knowing another family member had drained the hot water tank. The insulation on the outside of the tank got so hot it started going brown and making crackleing sounds.
Does anyone know if the immersion heater will have been damaged by this or will it be ok to just refill the tank and use as normal.

watch for leaks as soon as you start filling it
