Ignitor Condition

I was just told that the ignitor on my gas furnace (a RUUD 15 yrs old) is "on its last leg". Is there something to look for or a way to tell if this is the case?

The ignitor functions, has a dark "spot" near the center of it (is this common to aging or something else?) and that area glows brighter when the ignitor turns on.

Thanks for helping me understand the recommendation to replace the ignitor. [The repair looks straight forward, turn off power; remove 1 mounting screw and electrical connector then reverse for installation of new ignitor.]

It IS on its last leg. That bright spot will overheat and burnout very soon. After seeing hundreds of them burn out a tech knows what to look for.

Yep.

Common to find that on a clean and check.
Those customers that have them replaced right away. Have heat all winter long(providing other failures don't occur).
Those that don't. usually end up with no heat in the middle of the night, or on a weekend or holiday.
