Ice Machine Help??

Don't laugh, when I first got in the HVAC business (years ago?) I used to dream compressors were chasing me down the street. Since then no more dreaming.

Ice Machine Help??

Should have seen the look on my wife's face when we were in line for coffee and I was telling the lady behind the counter to clean the condenser coil on the fridge behind her!
After all the work on the ice machine downstairs at my restaurant and finally got it working with everyones help, I tackled the one behind the bar which hasn't worked in 6 months. Took it apart and cleaned the ice thickness sensor yesterday, walked in this morning, totally full! Working great

Ice Machine Help??

I found most commom problems on ice machines are water related, dirty unit, scale, water flow. I had one complaint that it was taking to long to make ice on a new unit. found out during construction the plumber ran a hot water line down instead of cold. trying to make ice with 130 degree water.

That's a great tip and really useful when diagnosing a unit. Seems as though diagnosing an ice machine is much more involved than anything I've been learning on so far (which I find very interesting and challenging).

Ice Machine Help??

Ice machines are more difficult. You cant just leave when you think it is fixed. you should let it run 2 cycles to make sure everything is working ok.
thats when you watch it with cup of coffee. I was working on a unit that was low ice production for a resturant. everytime i go there it was working great. dropped ice on time, pressures ok. temps ok. manager thought i was stupid for not finding problem and i thought they were nuts for it was running ok. this went on for a month and a half. i happen to go by there and decided to drop in to see how it was running and when i went into the kitchen there was the air cooled ice machine with boxes on top and all around it of cups, plates and things. all vents vere blocked. what they did was everytime they called me they would remove all the boxes so i can get to it and then they corrected the problem.
ice machines have criticle charges. i tell my student to always hook up your gages as a last resort on all refrigeration. check eveything else first. and look for the easiest things.

Ice Machine Help??

Embarrassingly this happens at my place more often than I'll admit... Stuff gets piled around units all the time and then the same people ask my why fridges don't seem cold enough!
