I have an American Standard Allegiance

I have an American Standard Allegiance 10 built in June 2000.
Model # 7A0036A100A2
The past few weeks, it had been blowing the 60amp Circuit Breaker with temps in the 90's and low 100's.

Last night, around 1AM, the 60amp AND the 100AMP MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER blew!!!

This morning, I found that with the thermostat at OFF, the fan on the condenser unit was still turning. The relay is humming. It clicks, but does NOT chatter, when I have the cutoff pulled and turn the thermostat to "COOL".

But, as soon as the "CUTOFF" is replaced and I turn thermostat to "COOL", the compressor clicks loudly and both the 60amp and the MAIN BREAKER trip off.

Any ideas?

Good chance the compressor or its crank case heater has a short in it. Do you have an ohm meter.

Grounded compressor, most likely, along with bad fan motor and other various components. Time to call your HVAC professionals.

And if you're running the house on a 100 amp panel, you might want to have someone look into that, especially if you're using 60 amps for the A/C. Might be time to upsize the service in the house.

I have seen in some isolated cases where system had a one pole contactor and one winding shorted to ground where the fan motor would run by a back feed of voltage. Don't know if this applies here as the 2 time I had this happen was with york units. This unit should have a two pole contactor.
