Dateline tonight is doing one of those stings where they pull a wire on system that is otherwise in perfect working order, then calling in a bunch of HVAC contractors to fix it... and then taping all the service scams. I only watched one where the guys found and fixed the wire, then proceded to sell coil cleanings, when in fact the coils had been cleaned a few days before in preparation. That was a pretty mild one I think. They probably had some full system replacements pitched to them but I couldn't watch any more. These guys give the industry a bad name....

It's a repeat, I seen that months ago.

The thing is they can and do the same story about any trade including Teachers, Law enforcement and Clergy just to mane a few.

Makes for good TV though.

heres what they did.according to an article in The News which is ACCA publication dateline contacted ACCA for this help and they went along with it. the companies they called all had F,s with the BBB so the companies were not called at random out of the phone book but were preselected to make a good story. ACCA was pissed how it was aired. how exciting would
the show be if 9 out of 10 fixed the problem?

If ya din't have all them bushes growin around your AC you'd get a better air flow, ergo better coldness. Ergo? That's how my condenser sounds when it's running, it goes Errrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

How the show was filmed, how the host speaks, how the "expert" did nothing in the way of professional at all, no capacitor checking, no superheat charging, no calculating target anything, no static pressure test (air flow), didn't tell us if the system was in need of any refrigerant before the taping of the show, no nothing.

I wouldn't hire their expert knowing that all he said was "it's good", that's for sure. And now I even have less respect for Dateline but then again, Chris Hansen is no John Quinones.

Doc, you are correct. But would the average homeowner know what any of that meant? Only people in the trades would understand the troubleshooting techniques...and this show targets the average Joe. It's more about right and wrong than how they come to that conclusion.

They should as well as Dateline, a supposed deep and in depth news broadcast, should have informed the public and proven it.

It's the continued decline of the Western Civilization as we know it. Plus their "expert" just came off as an asshat.

Put BT on that show, then we'd get somewhere!

Those shows are just concerned about ratings, ratings, and more ratings.

There definitely are companies out there that will take advantage of anyone they can. but there are far more companies out there that are honest and will only fix the problem at hand, and advise of other checks or maintenance that should be done sometime, but are not needed for the continued operation of the A/C at this time.

The show's "expert" will say its working fine, but not say what "his" definition of working fine is.

If they showed the guys who actually did an honest repair job on the unit then they would have blown their whole reason for filming the show
