HVAC won't shut off

Ok....first off I know very little about HVAC. I have a heat pump out side (Tempstar 5000) Same brand air handler inside. System should be about 10 yrs old. When i set the A/c to 74......sometimes, not all the time, it wont shut off and i'll come home to a VERY cold house. Same thing happens with the heat, I set it for 68 and come home sometimes and it's like 90! I have a digital thermostat about 6 yrs old and i can hear it "click" when the temp is hit but nothing happens. I usually have to shut off and on the breaker a couple times to get it to shut off. Again doesn't happen often but enough to be annoying and waste of money!

Any ideas?

Sounds like a bad thermostat. I would replace it with a Honeywell Vision or Focus Pro type. Make sure you get one suitable for a heat pump and CAREFULLY label the wiring and follow all the wiring instructions or call a pro. If it runs too long the compressor can get damaged from a low load/coil freeze up.

So i'm not sure exactly what model the thermo is but it's a 7 day program digital Honeywell......was already installed when we bought the house. So even though I hear the "click" it could still be a bad thermostat?.....if so i may just go buy a cheapie to test it out......I had assumed that not hearing the click would indicate a bad thermostat.........but you know what they say about assuming!

Also, I know the indoor blower is suppose to run for a bit after the outdoor unit shuts off but every since we have been in the house the blower stays on 99% of the time?........I can even turn the system off...(when it cooperates) and the blower stays on.....
