HVAC Unit Fire?

Early this morning we were awoken to a smell of something that was like a combination of burning plastic and a heater that was just turned on. We went downstairs and there was a haze of smoke downstairs and we were looking for the source of it but could find nothing. I then noticed that the HVAC vents were blowing out warm air. I went to the thermostat that controls the unit and checked it and the fan setting was on AUTO and the conditioning setting was on OFF but the unit, for some reason, was blowing warm air through the vents and I am assuming the smoke as well. It eventually stopped blowing for some reason so I turned on the thermostat and then switched the breaker to the unit off.

This is really worrying me, we've got somebody that is supposed to come out and look at it but I was wondering does anybody know what may have happened or caused this?

HVAC Unit Fire?

From the description, ( the smell, smoke & the warm air), he will probably first check to see if your furnace motherboard is toasted.
