I've seen commercials about getting your AC tuned up each year. They say that it will save you money in efficiency. Our house is 5 years old and we've never had the HVAC system looked at.
1. What does a tune-up consist of?
2. Does it really make that much of a difference?
3. Do I have the AC system looked at as well as the furnace?
4. Any tips for helping keep a front to back split level cool in the Kansas heat?
What it involves/includes varies with each company.
A clean indoor coil allows better air flow. So it also helps in heating mode.
Change your air filter on a regular basis.
Yes, at 5 years you should definately have preventative maint. done on your system. Don't hire a company in the TV commercials. Hire a company that you know and can trust.
The most important thing is to clean the coils (inside and out) along with any filtration.
It's also a good idea to thoroughly inspect the system for any tell tale signs of imminent failure.
Checking amperage and refrigereant pressures is also a good idea but that's even more reason to make sure you get a good tech. A "hack" can misinterpret readings and easily screw up a perfectly functioning unit. A "hack" can also use the opportunity to try and sell you things you don't need.
Our AC clean and check consists of-
change filter if needed
clean the condensing coils
blow out condensate
check: blower motor, blower wheel, condensor fan motor, capacitors, electrical connections, evap coil is clean, thermostat, contactor, freon pressures, superheat, subcool and temp drop across the coil.
Average customer recovers 100% of the service call in electric usage savings. Bonus is you get to choose when the service comes instead of breaking down and waiting 2-3 days for an available tech.
These are all great replies, thank you! Should I use Angie's list to find a good one in my area, or just talk to the guys at my trusted lumber yard/hardware store?
