HVAC transformer

Hello. I have a Carrier package unit on the roof. Mdl # 48KL118300BE Ser. 2484C60423. The transformer is fried. primary side requires 230V . black and orange . I have no problem understanding this but,the transformers secondary side puzzles me somewhat. this one has 2 posts with 3 terminal connections, on the side of the transformer. The wires that add up to 6 wires.I'll explain: two terminal posts for 3 wires each. A set of 3 black. One goes to the Compressor contacter. Probably coils. One down to a large spark valve. The second post with 3 wire terminals are orange and white. they are clearly 24 v. one wire of this termiinal connects to Thermostat 24 v. wire comming into package unit. this is a 304960-702 Transformer. Sorry for being long winded. The sub for this Transformer is a TRA01BD208A. With a price tag of around 60.00. I have two questions. can i use a PF32440 Transformer ? And Use the Primary side option of 230V (Orange Blk.) And on the secondary side connect the 3 Black wires to the Secondary blue transformer wire; And the other set of wires, orange ect. to the yellow secondary transformer wire, and be done with it??? Any help would be appreciated. Thank YOu.

Post the model and serial # of the unit and wait awhile. There are a few Carrier techs here.

Yes you can use the replacement xformer.
Some of the factory models have extra spade terminals for more wires. Others will piggyback on top of the other connectors.

power up the tr and read 24V right on the tr don't worry about where they go just get that true 24V onto the secondary

And possibly up to 29 vac if there is no load on the secondary.

Thank You for your comments. Cooool and helpful. To reiterate on the secondary side. As you stated , i can use this replacement tr. Now RE the secondary side . Can i tie all black wires to the Blue wire on the secondary side of TR. And all other wires- Orange White EXT. on the Yellow wire of the secondary side of the 24 volt ? thanks Again. regards, Curtis.

Make sure you put a fuse in the low voltage side. Why did the transformer burn up?

curtis19 11-13-2011 06:02 PM

Got it. A fuse comes with the TR on the blue wire of 24 v. And Yes, a great question. can you suggest some common culprits associated with the fried transformer. also 2 of the black wires on the 2ndary side comming out of tr r slightly melted. Thanks, curtis. PS: AWESOME FORUM. one of these wires goes down to an old heavy weight spark igniter plus valve. i think i have the term right. i call it a valve where the spark igniter wire plugs into. Its a rectangular steal box. About 9'' long with about 7 wires comming out.
