HVAC Squeal. What Is This Component?

We have traced a sound at work to an HVAC component installed on a duct. Can anyone tell me what this componet does? It is emitting a high pitced squeal when it activates about once an hour. We are worried the device is gone bad given the noise but are affraid to deactivate it not knowing if it is essential to the system.

Shaft needs lubing. I got some Vaseline

I got some wd40 and some 3in1 oil. That should do it I imagine.

Can the lube be done in tact or do you reccommend disassembly then lube?

No. Use non detergent oil. also could be the drive motor bearing has given up the ghost.

I think its a Carrier CCN zone damper.

Be careful where you spray WD40.

WD 40 is a solvent with minimal lubricating quality in comparison to to non detergent oils.

Older bearings could wash out what lube is left with WD 40 and freeze the damper completely.

Thanks, no wd40 got it.

Also thanks for the tip, after reseach I beleive you are correct it is a carrier zone damper

. I think something may be wrong with it though

. If it is an actuator a assume it actuates to an on or off position correct?

If my assumption is correct wouldn't it actuate on or off only occasionally due to whatever it is designed to detect? It is currently actuating for periods over an hour where the shaft moves back and forth continuously squeaking with each motion.

It could be intermitantly be losing its signal from the controller.

It could have become underdamped but I think the lost signal idea is more plausible.
