HVAC return vent location question
hello, i am moving my furnace in the basement to a different spot in the basement. my question is can i pull the air into the furnace in the basement to blow it upstairs? i am doing that now temporarily while i am remodeling and it works great. just wanted some insight on why most return air ducts are upstairs when the furnace is downstairs. thank you.

air from the basement is not from the furnace, the reason is that the return from the occupied space is truer and part of the heating design.out of the supply heats the space returns to the furnace.during your remodel no big deal, but if your looking at a long time till you reduct it to the house return consider how cold the basement gets if your in a winter area that is what the furnace has to heat up to satisfy the stat...unlike a 68F ducted return as it was designed your not doing any damage to anything just don't let stay RAW.
