Hvac relay problem?

Hi.

We have a 17 year old Trane hvac in our 2000sf Florida home. My home office sits on the opposite wall where our air handler is located in the garage, so I hear the ac kicking on and off all day.

Recently, though, the ac will kick on, run until it hits the temperature, then kick off YET, several times during the day, after it kicks off, it will immediately try kicking back on, then off, then on, then off, kind of like a car trying desperately to start. After it cycles on off, on off, it will then kick back on and run again for several minutes.

My ac guy said the thermostat was fine yet of course, the system would not do the "on off on off" while he was here. He mentioned it may just be the relay. Any thoughts?

Thank you!

Hvac relay problem?

Do you know, maybe something you can check while this is happening, if the outdoor unit is trying to start and stop while this is going on or if it is just the blower in the air handler that is doing it?

Hvac relay problem?

As above, if its just the indoor fan you hear, good chance it is the fan delay relay.

Hvac relay problem?

Good question, hvactech126! The air handler started the on off on off cycling and I immediately ran to the outside unit. It DID NOT try to turn on. So what's the expert opinion now?

Thanks, again!

Hvac relay problem?

Most likely a fan relay inside the air handler.

Hvac relay problem?

Thanks for the quick feedback!

Should I let the on off on off cycling continue until the relay dies or would it be smarter to have the relay replaced this week? Any implications for just letting it continue or would a new relay help with the operating efficiency?

Hvac relay problem?

Get the relay replaced ASAP. If it fails to turn the fan on the evaporator coil/A coil will freeezup and liquid refrigerant will slug back to the compressor and seriously damage it.
