HVAC condensor won't shut off

My problem is different as I removed the tstat from wall to paint and repair texture and when reistalled the condensor runs constantly. If I turn the tstat off, the condensor still runs. I have to think it's something I did while removing and reinstalling the tstat to the wall, but I made a diagram of wire locations on the electromechanical tstat before removal and have checked it several times since. Does this sound like the 4 wire lead has a short or break in it? The only way to stop the condensor is by throwing the on/off power supply switch on the wall next to the air handler.

HVAC condensor won't shut off

When this happened to me I found an earwig crunched in the contactor. It effectively held it closed.

On the contactor is the tstat? I'm not thinking this is my trouble since I drug a clean dollor bill thru the contacts yesterday.

The contactor is in the outside unit. Inside you may have smashed the wires when you reinstalled the stat and made a short.

Or, you may not have it wired right. What wire is connected where on the thermostat.
