HVAC Condenser FAN Motor hum and won;t start
When I got my AC tune-up done this spring, second unit condenser fan wasn't running. Compressor was running. Little push with a wooden stick to fan made fan started but very slow speed. Tech advised me to get motor replaced as Capacitor is OK. His quote was very high so, I decided to myself. I purchased matching OEM (GE) motor and new Capacitor from Grianger. I had dual capacitor earlier 35/3 and new motor needed 5 MFD, so I replaced capacitor with 35/5 to avoid wiring hassle.
After doing all this situation is still the same. I disconnected Compressor to make sure it is not loading or shorting. Contactor is pulling in and I cleaned rust from all the contacts. Connection - Motor Blue - Contactor where Black is coming from Power, Black to Cpacitor - common (common is connected to contactor with red wire) and Brown to cpacitor - FAN. Kindly advise. |

post a picture of the wiring diagram on the side of the motor on the data plate. Sounds like it is not wired properly.

You are right hvtech126, I swapped Blue and Black Wire. Motor is running OK but in opposite direction. How do I change direction of motor ?

some motors have external leads that you can switch to reverse them..it appears the motor you have is designed for the direction the arrow is pointing....

I just saw in Grainger web site , it is Counter Clockwise. So, I need to buy a motor which runs clockwise.
What if I reverse FAN blades, it should serve the purpose. It is sucking air instead of blowing and reversing fan will change air flow direction. No ? |

Yes, it is supposed to draw air thro' condenser and out from center to top. But due to it's rotation it is doing opposite.
I can't find a motor which will run clockwise. Original motor was GE 5KCP29ECA091AS. (1/10HP,208-230V, .75A< 1080 RPM, 60HZ, NEMA 42) What I got now is GE 5KCP29CCA341S, with same specification but running in opposite direction. |

Reverse the blue and brown wires from the motor that attach to the capacitor. It will run the opposite direction then.

you could be right been... most motors I see here in Canada with a diectional arrow are not reversable... would not be the first or last time I was wrong...

So just changing which 2 motor wires are where on the cap will change rotation. If its a 4 wire PSC, then it doesn't matter whcih wires are where on the cap, rotation will be the same. |
