I'm assuming blower motor? There should be a wiring diagram on the side of the motor. It sounds like your old motor was single speed (rare for a psc blower motor) and the new motor has 3 speeds. What is the model of equipment it is going in? Where did the old wires hook up? Pictures? Need more info...

Read the label on your old motor. It should say CW or CCW (counter clockwise)

When I replaced my Trane blower motor with a Dayton motor, it also had that yellow/purple wires but they did not get attached to the furnace at all.

It simple had a reversible plastic connector that allowed you to change the direction to match the old motor. Mine was:

CW

PURPLE -- PURPLE
YELLOW -- YELLOW

CCW

PURPLE -- YELLOW
YELLOW -- PURPLE

Good luck

PS. Your capacitor will still be charged so be careful and don't touch those terminals!
