which HRV unit to buy? brand comparison ect.

we have a very tight new modular home. the builder said he was sure we would need a hvr to bring in fresh air, and to keep indoor humidity down. looks like he was right, because we have excess moisture on windows, and during the -25 temps. last week, i noticed considerable frost on the inside corners of the rim joists. i am sure moisture was other places also.

the local hvac guys here are not real familiar with them, so i have to research this myself. i intend to install it myself, however if it looks like that isn't possible, i want to be sure of any of their recommendations.

this in northern iowa. what type of defrost should i look for? the motorized damper, or the supply motor shutdown? any comment on if the exchanger core should be aluminum or poly, or if that is important?

the units i have looked at on the internet are the fantech shr1504 and the suncourt he100. there have been other units mentioned on this board, but i have found no information on price or availability on them.

any other helpful information on hrv's welcomed.

I have a Venmar HE 2.6 and it does a very nice job of removing humidity and keeping the house fresh. It might be overkill for your house though.

thanks D in MN, do you know what type of defrost you are using? that is one main issue i want to know about before i select a unit. i am leaning towards the motorized damper. the hvac guys in my area don't deal with them enough for me to rely on their recommendation. i need about 100cfm's for my sq ft.

The supra control that I use has a dehumidistat built in with settings for outdoor temperature. It's a manual dial as there is no outdoor temp sensor. I set it based on the outdoor temp and it calculates how much moisture should be allowed in my home, checks that against the dehumidstat's reading and then turns on the air exchanger to remove humidity if necessary. I'm in the process of connecting my air exchanger to my IAQ 8335 envirazone board to see if I can better control my fresh air exchanges.

I hooked up my HRV to my 8335 zone board and now my Vision pro IAQ controls it perfectly (well almost). My vision pro IAQ is able to run the HRV at a minimum of 18mins per hour. I would like to run it down around 10mins per hour but the Vision pro IAQ setting doesn't go lower than 18mins. (IAQ setting 404 only goes down to 30%) . The added benefit is now it can keep my windows frost free based on the readings from my outdoor temp sensor that is connected to my 8335 zone board. The system controls both my whole house humidifier and HRV. This winter it has done a relatively good job of keeping things comfortable in our home.

Edit: geesh... I have bad grammar and spelling. Fixed!

An HRV that control frost by the damper would be my recomendation.
The Fantech would probably be your better choice.
