how to test/check gas valve/thermocouple

Hello Gent's,

Im a noob and hoping to have a great time here.

I read a fantastic how guide here on gas valves, but I want to check proove for myself to save me getting ripped off!

ok,

GLOWWORM , Gas back boiler,

the pilot light is good and blue and flame comes over the thermocouple

so if the thermocouple does not get any flame then the pilot light goes off , right.

likewise if the pilot light blows off there should not be any gass as the gas valve should then vut the gas off.

So I wanna test that this is working correctly.

NOW I was thiking if I turn the gas off while the pilot is on (extingising the pilot) I should not (after I have turned the gas back on be able to get a flame or light the pilot say with a taper. Think it should be about 1 minute or so? before the valve shuts

(I should only be able tolight it after I press the button on and turn to pilot, when I should be able to hear gas)

If I disconnect the thermocouple when I light the pilot it either wont light or stay on?

cheers again

Sounds like you have a handle on it, but my opinion won't count until my eyebrows grow back.

Boy, does that stuff stink when it burns...

how to test/check gas valve/thermocouple

ok update,

first I purchased a gas detector, which is liek a wand device with a LED on it, (tested it on the cooker )

ok, this is what I found.

The gas valve was set to ON

I turned the gas off while the pilot was fully lit, and waited for it to extinguish, leaving it for approx 20-30 secs I heard the gas valve make a click.

So turned the gas back on, and put the tester as far close as I could get it to the Pilot light and it detected nothing, on clicking the ignitor, i did actually get a EXTREMLY small gas pilot but when I tried to turn the termostat on to simulate the gas burner coming on it extigished.

ok tried the same thing again a second time
the pilot light refused to come on no matter how much I clicked the ignitor.

All the while the gas detector picked up nothing.

does this mean the gas valve is working as it should do in the event of the pilot going out?

any other test i can try cheers
