How much space between furnace and walls?

Is it gas or electric unit? The rating plate will have the specs for clearances to combustibles or the install manual which may be online.

Yuri has it right. The unit should be marked with "clearance to combustible surface" information. Generally oil furnaces have a larger clearance requirement. Special units like some 90% and higher gas units and mobile home furnaces may be rated for 0 clearance, meaning it can be installed with full contact. Clearance requirements may also come into play with the type of floor its on as well, requiring a non-combustible base kit. Check the plate and the manual. Don't take chances.

It's a mobile home unit that HAD about a 2" gap around it. I was thinking if I ever get a larger unit, I may want more space in the hole as well?

Thanks

Check out the Nordyne/Miller/Intertherm site. They make a lot of mobile home units, cornered the market where I am. You don't want to lose clearances for fire insurance reasons.

Well, it was installed by a company so I imagine the 2" was OK then? I was thinking more like 3", so I should be safe enough. My concern is the size of the newer units. Will they fit in the same area if/when I get a higher eff. rated one? It's being reinstalled on 3/4" ply floor over 2x12s, centered on 16". The flange I removed will slide nicely between the joists, but I'll need a plenum to attach the steel ductwork I'm using to, below the level of the joists..
....and dampers, and register vents, and elbows, etc...

W/O knowing the model and manuf. specs we cannot answer that. Beware that mobile homes have skinny undersized ductwork so you may need to upsize it for a bigger unit. Try Nordyne and see if they have online install specs for those units.

This thing kicks out some major heat, and I'm using 6" round ducts traveling only a bit farther than the flat ones were.
The inspector said it matters not, as long as it can maintain 68° at 3' from the floor. It's a 62,000 btu Nordyne direct vent/forced air unit.
