How to help my AC during the heat wave?

Hi there all,

I am in central Texas right now and the ten-day forecast is looking bad - over 105 for the next week. Our AC unit is circa 1998 and I want to make sure we're being as kind as we can to it while it's working so hard. We're keeping it up around 80 to make sure the temp outside isn't more than about 25 degrees higher than the temp inside - is there anything else we can do to make sure we're doing everything we can? We JUST bought this house and we were told that the coils needed to be cleaned, but we hadn't gotten to it yet. Now I'm freaking out!

i'm in texas too, i raise the temp on the thermostat during the day to 82 and have it kick back on about 6:30 or so in the evening when the temp outside has come down a bit and the load on the unit won't be so high.

oh, and i have two units and they are both circa 1993 but have been doing great in the heat this summer so far.

Keep the filter fresh and spray the radiator fins down on the outside unit, they get dusty and prevent heat exchange. I'm in Austin, I can sympathize with you!

In addition, make you have a clean filter and get that coil cleaned as soon as possible. Make sure your supply and return ducts are sealed. With caulk and spray foam, seal every electrical and plumbing penetration in your attic. Add a radiant heat barrier up there. Add ceiling fans (helps a LOT). Finally, blow in a THICK layer of insulation in your attic.

Do the sealing and insulating job once and it saves you money as long as the house exists.

give the outdoor coil a GOOD flushing with a garden hose and sprayer but NOT a pressure washer. get as close and powerful as you can w/o bending the fins with a garden hose as the dirt gets trapped inside the coil where you don't see it.

heat sucks for a/c attic work but the contractors get plenty of business around here in this heat that's for sure.

There was a article yesterday, that they found another part of the shuttle Columbia in Nacogdoches, due to the drought.

I'm in Houston, 107 today heat indeax, officially 103 without heat index.

Yeah, rinsing the condenser coil is so so if it's completley caked in dirt but for the most part will only shove the dirt you can not see further into itself inside of the fins.

I rinsed a coil today that dropped the head pressure from 425 to 275 instantly, just water so again, it'll do but I'd have it professionally chemically cleaned, like so:

comparatively to just water, this will be like treating your system to a few months at the spa..and she will show you love back.
