Hot house, living room only
I am looking for solutions to a hot house (living room only). The house living space has a vaulted wood beam ceiling in the living room but regular drop & insulated ceilings in the bed/baths. The cool part of the house in summer is the bed/baths. Howerver, the tung in groove maple ceiling in the living room gets mighty hot. There is a ceiling fan (living room) and air conditioning (whole house) but the heat is trapped up near the ceiling and cool air is not exchanged to live comfortably in the living room during the hot days. There are two floor vents that porvide air flow in and one wall vent (1x3 foot) near center of room near baseboard.
How do I change the current hot house before next summer?

Vaulted ceilings will always give a larger heat load, you can have them insulated, call an energy auditer to come out he will be able to give you more options after looking at your situation there. Is your windows facing East/West or North/south? East/West will give you a tremendous heat load to that room.

any thing above the normal 8' eiling is just added space to cool and bet when you go up on a 6' ladder you feel that heat right above the wall line...might consider venting the upper ceiling but make it look like its no seen....have it run when the supply fan runs or prior to the cooling run to exhaust the false load.
