high pitched tone from boiler?

A loud and high pitched noise suddenly started coming from my parentís mechanical room. I have a very hard time trying to tell where it is coming from, although I believe it is from the boiler (we have hot water heat). The only other thing in the room would be a hot water heater, but the sound if definitely louder by the boiler. The boiler appears to be functioning normally, with gauges indicating normal temp/pressures.

The noise is loud enough to be heard anywhere in the basement, and is very high pitched (my father canít hear it, but both my mother and I can). It is also very uniform in intensity and pitch. It almost sounds like tinnitus. It has persisted without change for about a day.

The noise persists when I cut power to the entire room, so it does not appear to be electrical.

Any thoughts about what this could be and how much it should concern me?

is this a steam boiler or hot water baseboard with a circulation pump?

Is the noise present when the burner is off?
How old is this unit?
Is it vented thru a chimney or other?

The sound is indeed present even with the burner off. The boiler is over 50 years old. It is vented through double walled pipe up a wood frame chase (was orgiannly a chimney, changed about 12 year ago).
