help - what kind of thermostat?
We have a 4 ton package unit (not split) AC with gas heat. Currently it has an old thermostat that is not quite accurate--we'd like to upgrade to a digital thermostat. Is there a specific type that needs to be installed since we have gas heat? Is there one brand that is better than another?

Any help is appreciated--thanks in advance :)

Does your current system have a heat pump with backup gas heat? Or is it just gas heat and A/C?

If the later, then you should be fine with a single stage thermostat.

If the first (HP and gas heat) you'll want a two stage t-stat with an outdoor thermostat on the HP.

Honeywell Vision Pro (touch screen) or Focus Pro are 2 of the best. You need to see if there is a W2 wire terminal on the one you have for 2 stage htg. If it has that then buy a 2 stage thermostat only. Post the make and model and serial # of the unit and we may be able to look up a wiring diagram for it.

check out the Grainger site item# 4TL92 Honeywell digital stat will give you a basic idea for that package.W is the typical heat contol point from that you will be looking at R,G,Y1,W1,C to connect down into any style of digital stat for gas fired will configure the stat thru sub menus for gas, electric, oil heat/cooling stages and 25 other non-application items values they offer.check the grainger prices and hit Lowes and HD for comprable styles and brands.basically most are systems...heat/off/auto/cool fan...on/auto then setting as wake/leave/return/sleep for temps and times.Honeywell has the Vision Pro series also, and that can be wired to your unit also which is like an ATM screen with no buttons or switches.

thanks so much--we stood in the t-stat aisle and were a little overwhelmed. I knew you guys could help!

I'll have to get the unit's information later--we're not working at the house today.
