Help with a "splitter unit"??

I'm finishing a basement, pulled permits, and apparently either need to zone my current system (not easy given space restrictions) OR, the HVAC guy said I could put a "splitter unit" on the wall with a unit outside. I assume similar to a heat pump.

I've never (before today) heard of them? Are they any good? Reliable? Noisy?
He said LG & Kawasaki and several others make them?

I really wasn't prepared for an extra 2-3K for the HVAC. I was hoping he could run a couple of drops and be done with it - but I guess not.

Let's hear some opinions - thanks,
Rick

Google: ductless mini split. They are quiet and work well. I would stay with a major brand like LG, Sanyo, Mitsubishi or Fujitsu. Some others are very hard to get parts and info for later.
