Help with outside condenser unit

OK HERES THE SEIRIES OF EVENTS...had a leak in the last 20 feet of line and had it fixed. it worked for a day and then the fan in the outside unit stopped. isolated the problem to the fan motor and swapped it with a replacement but not an exact replacement. it was a generic model. ther was a lot of trouble wiring it correctly. the tech who worked on it was not famliar with that particular fan and i gues he didnt wire it correctly. it worked for a half hour to an hour and stopped. the compressor however continued to run till it overheated and now not only does the fan not run but the compressor sounds like its trying to start every few minutes but cant run. I have an opprtunity to purchase an exact replacement fan motor but im comtemplating replacing the whole outside unit. i would much prefer to spend $100 for a new fan motor than $1700 to replace the whole outside unit but im not sure if i want to gamble the $100. My system is 11 years old and its a 3 ton international home comfort model. R22. Thoughts?

sounds like he was trying to covert a dual cap with w sungle cap.

If it were me I would ask the guye to please come back, Tell him you know "stuff" happens and things don't alwaysright. Tell him you would like to warranty the motor or brng a motor that he is familiar wit,

Good luck.

Most of the time a compressor sounding like it's trying to start but can't is due to a bad capacitor. Call the guy back to replace the new motor under warranty . That also could be a capacitor issue if he wired it to the old one.
