Help microwave vent problem

I have a ge spacesaver, jvm1340, just bought the house with it. It does not vent to the outside of the house, rather it is to vent out the top of the unit. When i turn on the vent fan, air sucks in the top, and the bottom and blows out between the unit and the cupboard on either side. So when I cook something on the stove and use the fan, this air flow just pushes the smoke and abeam around rather than sucking it in. Any ideas? Thanks

Yep. sounds like there is a block off plate missing. Look up the installation manual (unless you have it) and see whats missing.
