Help furnace keeps blinking out!!!

We are a household of two woman and one 28 year old nephew (useless, sorry to say). The furnace was light throughtout the year and when my mother tried to turn on the heater it went out. I tried lighting it and didn't do it in the right place .
A friend came over yesterday and light the funace, and shortly later it went out again after he left. He said what may be wrong with it, but when I asked him what he said, he didn't answer me. (My mom said he is hard of hearing).
I am going to try to light it in a few minutes. If it goes out again, could you tell me what it could be. I want to at least sound a little like I know what I am talking about so if we do need to call a repair man he won't take us to the cleaners. We are two women on Social Security, very fixed income.
Would appreciate any replies.

It sounds like there may be something blocking the valve such as rust or scale. In my area the heat and air companies usually run a fall startup special. They will come out and test and clean you burners and check everything out. And as a special it's not very expensive especially now compared to in the dead of winter when they are busy. But someone else may have a better idea.

How old is you furnace? Sounds like it may be a thermocouple issue if you are relighting it. Some are easier to change than others and you can buy them at any of the hardware type stores for anywhere from $10-20.

The make & model of the furnace....or.. a photo with the furnace doors off ....especially of the burner components
will help.

Cracked heat exchanger or weak thermocouple are the likely suspects.
