Heil Furnace pilot will not stay on to light burner

I have a 20 year old Heil furnace and the pilot light will not stay on long enough to light the burner, it continues to spark light and goes out after seconds of being on. Where do I start?

Start by re-posting this in the hvac forum down below. Then, if you have flame for a few seconds and then it shuts off, you check your flame sensor which can be cleaned (lightly scrubbed) with your every day scotchbrite dish pad.

Google search "flame sensor" so you know what to look for. It has one single wire to it and sits in the flame. It verifies that flame is present. If not, the unit quits trying to light, then tries again.

One option.

Or just keep reposting in here every 9 min.
Sounds like a flame sensor problem to me. How long does the pilot stay lit? About 5 seconds?

first thig is to clean the flame sensor. The control circuit allows the gas valve to stay open for ~5 seconds to allow the burners to light and the flame sensor to "see" the flame. The sensor is a wire-like probe that sticks out above one of the burner tubes. It needs to be clean and fully engulfed in the flame when the burners light. If there is no flame in the area of it you may need to pull the burner tubes and clean them as well.

This is not the advice you want to hear but oh well. Furnaces are like people in that the older they get the more important that yearly check up is. A 20 year old furnace in a climate that needs heat the first week in September is like a 90 year old man. Odds are the heat exchanger has cracks and now's the time to find that out instead of the dead of winter. Cleaning pilots, burners and flame sensors and heat exchanger inspection will all be performed by the tech while he's there. It's way cheaper than a Dr. visit and needs to be done once a year.
