Heil Furnace issues
I have 3 issues! Newly installed (June 2010) Heil furnace for a new construction home. Don't know if this matters, but the contractor never used a temporary furnace during the construction. He installed the Heil while house was under construction. Anyways - It makes a high pitched whistle when blower starts. sometimes it stays on for a few seconds. other times it is on for a minute or so before disappearing. I also hear a loud "thud" or thump occasionally when the furnace starts sometimes. Not sure if thats the damper or something else. And 3rd - The furnace occassionally (3 times this winter so far) fails to "turn over" sometimes, and is trying to kick on but can't. The signal light on the furnace is flashing 6 times plus 1 time which according to the furnace manual means something about the ignitor failing. Does anyone know what this means? Besides that I probably got a lemon and need a new furnace! Thanks!

It's under warrant so call the contractor out. Check your filter first though. Drywall dust in motors will chew them up .

Another thing is have him check the static pressure of the supply duct and return duct. On a gas furnace he should put one probe between the filter and blower motor and the other probe between the evap coil and the furnace. Inside the furnace there's a label that says maximum static pressure, it MUST be under that. The blower should be on cooling speed when testing. Air squeel and popping duct are both indication of too small of duct.
The static pressure test will show if that's a correct diagnoses or not. Make sure he does the test and puts the results in writing. Post what the out come is.

Thanks! I will have him do that. He is coming out today hopefully.

In terms of the air squeel and popping duct - When you say too small of duct, are you talking about the whole house having too small of ducts or just the duct near the furnace? Thanks!

Can't say for sure it's even a duct work issue at this point. The test will show if it's correctly sized or not.

He was out yesterday at my house. All looked ok with what you were talking about. The flame sensor (I think he called it) which looked like a 4 inch needle taht I believe was L shaped, was very dirty. Black almost. A lot of possible dry wall dust and gunk on it from construction I think. He scrubbed that back to a shiny copper color. it hasn't failed yet now that the sensor is clean. he said if this doesnt work then I am getting a new circuit board. stay tuned.
